Property worth crores of rupees was destroyed in a devastating fire that gutted at least 13 residential houses and 18 shops near Ziyarat Shareef Reshi Mool (RA) in Cheeni chowk area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday.


The cause of the fire was not yet known but eyewitnesses said the blaze erupted at around 3.30 am in a shop and quickly spread to adjacent shops and residential houses spread over six buildings, resulting in huge loss of property.


Sources said locals came out of their houses and made a brave attempt to douse the fire as fire tenders reached at the site after a delay of two hours. "We cannot tell you the estimated damage to the property but we have suffered a huge loss," a victim of told Kashmir wire.


“There are total six buildings in which 13 residential houses and 18 shops were completely gutted,” an official told Kashmir wire.


He said the losses were massive but we cannot put out a figure just now. “It will be assessed later in the day,” the official added.


However, there were no casualties and cause of the fire is being investigated, he said.


The locals have assembled to clear the debris from the main road which is considered to be a main commercial hub of the town. “It is difficult to pass the road as it is littered with burnt out material,” locals said. (Kashmir Wire)
